The Cay

I have enjoyed reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor. I hope you did too! The author, Mr. Taylor, dedicated The Cay to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream. Mr. Taylor states that King's dream "can only come true if the very young know and understand."

Please respond to the following:
Why did Mr. Taylor dedicate The Cay to Dr. King? Support your answer from the text.

Do you think Phillip was prejudice? Do you think he grew as a character? Give examples from the the text to support your answer.

  1. Well I think he dedicated it to Dr. Martin Luther King Junior because it had to do with Phillip and his family being prejudice towards African Americans, and by the time the book ended Phillip really enjoyed the company of the fellow black men, spending time on the harbor.
Yes, at one time, at the very beginning of the book, he was racist towards black people, he did grow as a main character in the book because in the text it said, or said something like, that he doesn't mind black people all that much anymore. Does this satisfy your inquisitive desire for my own superior thoughts? Bye Mr. Gilliam!

  2. I think The Cay was dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because Dr. King wanted white and black people to work together as a team and work together. Timothy (Black man) and Phillip (White boy) became friends and depended on each other for survival.
I do not think Phillip was not prejudice in the beginning because he did not really know about black people when he was living in Willamstad. I also do not think Phillip was prejudice because he respected Timothy the way he wanted to be respected and at the end is was not prejudice.

  3. There was a character that acted just like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his name is Timothy. He was not offended by the words Phillip said to him.

Phillip was prejudice because he called Timothy a stupid old black man. At the end Phillip was less prejudice then the beginning.

  4. I think the reason why Mr.Taylor dedicated the book to King's dream is because in the book Philip and Timothy are treating eachother like equals.
To me personaly I think that in the beginning of the story Phillip was prejudice but near the end Phillip and Timothy was close friends.
At the end Phi;llip grew alot as a character first he was prejudice and at the end he would rather be with black people then his own friends.

  5. Why did Mr. Taylor dedicated The Cay to Dr. King? Well, the book was how a white boy with a prejudice mother got along with a old black man. Do you think Phillip was prejudice? No, because he was alright with Timothy being black and he only got mad and said something of his color only because he didn't want to work. Do I think that Phillip grew as a character? Well, he talks to the black people and some of them knew Timothy.

Back then we were apart but today we are together! Yes in the beginning pPhillip was prejudice but in the end Timothy and him grew closer together. He found that it doesn't matter if you are white or black we are all the same on the inside!

  8. I think Mr. Taylor dedicated this book to Dr.
King's dream because it was 1942 and that was around segregation. And I don't think he was racist because he said his mom didn't like black people.

  9. I believe that Mr. Taylor dedicated the book The Cay to Mr. King's dream because Phillip's mother was racist and she didn't like black people and Mr. King said there is no reason to hate black people and he also said that it does not matter if you are black or white there is no reason to hate another skin color. I think Phiilip was races at the begining and at the end he was still a little racist but not as much as he was in beginning because he asked Timothy was he still black.

  12. Mr. Taylor dedicated this book to Dr. King because Phillip was prejudice and young and at the end Phillip wasn't prejudice. In other words, he changed just like Dr. King wanted.

I do think Phillip was prejudice at the begining of the story because he called Phillip offensive names. I do think Phillip changed as a character because he was nice to Timothy and wanted to be his friend.

  13. I think the book was dedicated to King's dream because there was no stereotyping. Even Timothy said "I don't like some black people my own self. And some white people. It would be outragous if I didnt like any of them".

In the beginning Phillip was a little prejudice against black people. Through the story he gains charecter and in the end he is no longer prejudice.

  14. I think Mr. Taylor dedicated the book to Dr. King's dream because the book has some racist stuff in it and Mr. King wanted to stop the things that split up the races.

I think at the beginning of the book Phillip was a little racist, but he learned it doesn't matter, if you're a different race--everyone matters no matter what color you are.
