Eco-columns

This quarter in science as part of your study of ecosystems you constructed an eco-column. Tell me several things you learned about plant and animal interaction (be sure to use some of the vocabulary words you learned) and then tell me what you enjoyed about this unit.

  1. Thanks for letting us do this in science this year Mr.Gilliam! I learned that plants and animals rely on each other to survive like mosquito fish rely on elodea to hide from their hungry mommies and daddies. Also about ecosystems and the foodchain. I liked when we put the animals in our terrarium.

  2. Some things that I learned this unit are that crickits are considered pests for farmers because they eat plants and crops. Also, I learned that snails like to eat poop and clean rocks.
My favorite part was was when we had to investigate the snails and fish.

  3. For one, I enjoyed this quarterly science project. I mean the best part about it is that we got to work in groups of two just like middle and high school. Anyways I also liked that we got to work with real life animals. The crickets and fish were hard to get. I learned the roly-polys we worked with are actually called isopods, which I might add were hard to catch as well. The snail's only problem was that they just were stuck to the container. All in all this science project was way better than the last one, and it looks pretty cool to boot! Nice one Mr. Gilliam!

  4. I learn that the fish needs algae to live. Mr. Gilliam I know the differents between a aquarium and a terrarium. You put in animals. This is the best science project I ever did. Thanks for letting us name our fish.

  5. I learned what the real name for the isopod. I liked the part when we all got to put in all the animals. I also learnd another fish called moscito fish. They are territorial.I loved the Eco colums. WV IS THE BEST!!!!!

  6. I learned how elodea protects the baby fish when he or she is born because their parents sometimes eats them. I also learned that the crickets eat the grass, then they use the bathroom the nutrients go through the soil, then through the screen to the fish the fish eats it and then everyone is happy.

  7. What I have enjoyed is putting the animals in our eco-columns but the most fun part was watching the animals explore their new homes. Also I liked making the eco-columns it was so cool. But after you make them it gets a little boring waiting for the plants to grow and for the animals to get shipped but you get over it once the animals come. Well that's what I enjoyed thanks for reading.

  8. The frist thing I learn about eco-columns is that mosquito fish eat there young ones and that the snails kept the aquaium clean. I also learned that elodea can be planted two ways and that roly polys are isopods. The bugs gives the fish nutrients and fish are so terrtorial.

  9. When we made our eco-columns I learned that algae is a type of plant, snails eat the poop from the fish, and roly polys eat plants. While we were making our eco-columns I had fun putting in the algae plant with my partner Emy. In our eco-columns we had a terrarium and an aquarium. The aquarium had fish, algae, snails, and gravel. The terrarium had mustard seeds, alfalfa seeds, and rye seeds. The terrarium also had forest, crickets, and isopods, seeds, rye seeds.

  10. This quater I learned that elodea, duckweed, and algae are all plants under the sea. My favorite part of the experiment was watching the mosquito fish swim everywhere as fast as lighting. They eat elodea, and duckweed. We also put crickets, isopods (pill bugs), and snails. All the reptiles, insects, and the mammals were very fascinating.

  11. There are many things I have learned! Here are some things I have learned, I learned that roly polys have a cool name, there name is isopod! I also learned that snails are called stomach feet!
We also have some plants in there, such as elodea, duckweed and alage! I HAD SO MUCH FUN!

  12. I learned about the snails ate the mosquito fishes excrement. The mosquito fish ate their little fry when they are born. The fry immediatetly swim to the elodea for protection. The crickets eat the rye, mustard, and alfalfa. The crickets and roly poly live in the terreriam.

  13. This quarter in science we made an eco-column wich is a terrarium on top of a aquarium in the aquarium we put 2 musquito fish and 2 pond snails. Also in the aquarium we put elodea, algea and duckweed. In the terrarium we put 2 or 3 crickets and 2 or 3 isopods. Also we put alfalfa, grass, mustard seed, and rocks and twigs.

  14. What I learned about my ecocolumn is that the fish need to stay at a certin temputure to live. ANOTHER there thing is that crickets only cherp at night and that they have 4 legs. THE best thing about my ecocolumn is that you can see some of the magnificent animals of the world, but the last thing I learned is that isopods have a lot of legs to help them move. THANKS MR.GILLIAM for leting us learn about this in science.

  15. I learned a lot by doing the eco-columns that mosquito fish need to stay at a certain tempature in their habitat to survive and that mosquito fish eat their children. I also learned that isopods are relatives to the lobster family and the crickets babies are so small that you have to use a magnify to see them. In this unit I enjoyed making the aquarium and learning about the different animals and insects.

  16. We learned alot of things we learned about crickets. Crickets can jump to 2 ft baby cricket is called a nymph. And we learned about elodea it has a root elodea has a long branch stem and it has whorl leaves. And we learned about mosquito fish female mosquito fish are big baby mosquito fish are called fry they eat elodea. Isopods are like lobsters and they turn into a ball when there scared. Snails have tentacles and they have a foot they use it to climb. my favorite thing about the eco columns is the fish cause they keep swimming.

  17. I learned a lot of things from doing the eco-columns such as Mosquito fish needs to stay at a certain tempature to live. I learned that crickets can jump 2 feet. Isopods are related to the lobster family because isopods can live in water in a good amount of time and it has the same shell as a lobster. I also learned snails have a hard suction, it can stay in the same position at all times and it barely moves. My favorite part of the eco-systems were putting the Mosquito fish and snails in the aqaurium and the crickets and isopoods in the terrarium.

  18. We learned all about aquarium and terrariums. The terrarium had crickets, isopods or roly polys and soon we will add worms. In the aquarium has snails and mosquito fish. This is the end of my learning. For now.

  19. I learn about elodea that it is a plant that goes in the water. I also learn that terrarium is the top part. The snail eats the mosquito fish's poop. Aquarium is the other part of the eco-column.
